Guide for Free Usage
Companion uses a bring-your-own-key model.
That means LearnKit does not require a separate subscription for AI features. If your provider offers free usage, you can use Companion on that free tier.
Recommended free setup
Section titled “Recommended free setup”The simplest free-start path is OpenRouter.
- Open
Settings -> Companion. - Turn on
Enable Companion. - Set
AI providertoOpenRouter. - Set
OpenRouter model catalogtoFree. - Paste your OpenRouter API key.
- Pick a free model, or start with
Auto Router.
If one free model is busy or rate-limited, switch to another one.
Why OpenRouter is the easiest free option
Section titled “Why OpenRouter is the easiest free option”LearnKit’s Companion settings explicitly support OpenRouter’s free model catalog and keep router models pinned at the top.
That makes it the most straightforward provider for trying free usage without guessing model IDs.
Keep free usage practical
Section titled “Keep free usage practical”To reduce failures and unnecessary token use:
- keep generated card counts small while testing
- disable flashcard types you do not need
- avoid image-heavy prompts unless you know the model supports vision
- keep prompts short and specific
- use text-only workflows first, then add attachments later if needed
What to expect from free models
Section titled “What to expect from free models”Free tiers are useful, but they are less predictable than paid models.
You may see:
- slower responses
- rate limits
- temporary unavailability
- lower quality outputs
- weaker attachment or vision support
If a free model fails, try another model before changing the rest of your setup.
Security reminder
Section titled “Security reminder”API keys stay in your local LearnKit plugin data.
Do not commit your key file to a public repository.
